Linking Renters to Affordable Options
Finding a roommate can be a great way to access more affordable housing. While this may be a good financial option for you, there are many factors to consider.
Ways to find a Roommate
- Post an ad on Kijiji for free ( Kijiji)
- Search existing ads on Kijiji ( Kijiji – Roommate)
- Post an ad and search existing ads on Roomies
- Post on your social media networks
- Ask your friends and family
If you find someone who may be a good potential roommate, meet them at a public place, and consider taking a friend or family member with you.
You may wish to talk to your potential roommate about the following:
- Can your potential roommate pay their portion of the rent?
- Will either of you conduct a credit check or background check?
- Are they an early sleeper or late sleeper; does this match your schedule?
- Do you have concerns about noise, such as radio, TV, or loud guests?
- What is their work or daily schedule?
- Will you have rules about guests (how many guests at one time, overnight guests)?
- Do they drink, smoke, or use any drugs; will you allow smoking inside the unit?
- Will you share groceries or have meals together?
- How will the chores be split up?
- Do they consider themselves clean or messy?
- Who will set up phone, internet, or cable and be responsible for payment?
- Which furniture will be provided in common areas?
- Will you both sign an agreement with the landlord?
- Do they have any pets or plan to get any pets?
- Will you have Emergency Contacts for each other?
- What are their expectations?
Carefully evaluate if you think the roommate match would be a good fit. It’s better to take your time and choose the right roommate.
